December 2, 1928 - November 19, 2021
Pastor Jesus Gonzalez was born December 2nd, 1928 in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. Pastor grew up splitting his time between the city and his uncle’s plantation, Espenvil, where he learned animal husbandry and farming. He was exiled from Cuba and immigrated to the United States in 1965 along with his two daughters and wife and settled in Redlands. As a political refugee, he was responsible for the successful relocation of many family members. He was a prolific athlete, running on the Cuban National Team for track and field and also being scouted by the Washington Senators baseball team. His athletic prowess continued for his entire life and he was lovingly referred to as “Buff Grandpa” by his grandchildren. In Cuba, he received his degree from the University of Havana where he met the love of his life Olga Carreras. They married and settled in Havana and had two daughters when Pastor was chosen for a prestigious program to become one of the youngest bank executives in the country. In Redlands, he continued his successful career working for companies such as Coca Cola and Harris Gottschalks. He retired at 65 as the Controller of the Yucaipa Valley Water District. After retiring, he returned to his roots becoming an avid gardener growing organic vegetables and tropical fruit trees from his home country. His love of dancing and infectious personality were larger than life and will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He passed peacefully in his sleep on November 19, 2021, only a few weeks shy of his 93rd birthday. He is survived by his two daughters, Leila and Olga, and his four grandchildren. Rest in Peace, Papi we love you.
