Luis M Lebredo

Luis Lebredo, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, passed away December 22, 2020. He was born in Cuba and escaped Castro’s regime in 1978 after being held unjustly, for 15 years, as a political prisoner. During his life, Luis faced many challenges with determination and resolve, the most difficult being the forced long separation from his family. Upon his release he and his wife rebuilt their lives and together traveled extensively through Europe, Asia, and the America’s. Luis received a law degree from the University of LA Habana, and served as Undersecretary of Education during the first year after Castro took power. He was most proud of having opened 1000 small schools in the country during his time in this position before having to resign his post due to Castro’s turn to communism. His other proud achievements included being a lawyer representative of the Cuban teacher’s union, and owning of a successful private school in Habana. His passion for education continued after he settled in Redlands; he received a Master’s in Spanish Literature from UCR; and a teaching credential from Cal State San Bernardino. He taught high school math and also taught Spanish at various colleges in the area. Luis worked closely with his wife on a Spanish language text book series that is still used in many universities throughout the country. Luis was preceded in death by his beloved wife Raquel to whom he was married 66 years. He is survived by his two children and two grandchildren
